Logline: After surviving a brutal gang attack in his native, south side Chicago, Amare defers for a year from his first choice ivy league school, White University and instead, sets out to discover his true identity from his estranged father, a prominent lawyer and politician in the Ivory Coast.
AMARE TURNER (18) ventures to Africa to discover his roots and royal ancestry, after being brutally attacked by a gang, rejected by his high school crush, and informed that his biological father is a prominent lawyer and politician in the Ivory Coast. What begins as a summer of getting to know his father turns into a year of self discovery, as he navigates the dangerous campaign trail with his ambitious father and learns the importance of community from his grandfather, a tribal leader. Along his journey, he experiences loss, rejection, betrayal, heartbreak until his knowledge of self imbues him with a sense of purpose, power, family, love and forgiveness. His journey takes us through various parts of Africa and then finally back to America where he returns to empower and enlighten his family and his newfound community at White University.
